“Salamtek – Telemedicine” is a humanitarian digital health project proposed by Qanawat (Biomedical Engineering Office) to be implemented inside Syria over a period of 18 months. The project’s main objective is to create an easy-to-use application that connects Syrian doctors with patients across the country, enabling fast and accessible primary medical consultations. These consultations help patients understand their symptoms, assess urgency, and make informed decisions about whether they need an in-person medical visit or can follow initial guidance remotely.

The project responds to a critical healthcare challenge in Syria: the shortage of doctors, especially in villages, small towns, and remote regions. Many patients also face serious difficulties traveling to medical centers due to distance, cost, or limited mobility. In many situations, a prompt digital first assessment can provide essential direction and prevent unnecessary trips, long waiting times, and additional expenses. The platform also allows Syrian doctors inside and outside Syria to contribute through voluntary or free consultations, helping reduce the financial burden on the population.

The workflow is structured and practical. Patients first fill out a medical intake form describing their condition and answering guided questions, with the option to upload available medical documents (such as test results, reports, or photos). After reviewing the information, the doctor provides consultation either through text-based messaging or a video call, depending on the patient’s internet quality. When internet connectivity is weak, text consultation remains fully available to ensure wider access.

Expected outcomes include improved access to medical advice regardless of location and time, earlier engagement with healthcare services, and better patient decision-making. The project aims to lower overall healthcare costs, encourage early consultation before symptoms worsen, and promote the adoption of digital health solutions in underserved communities. Salamtek does not fully replace in-person medical examinations when they are necessary, but it provides a reliable first step for guidance, initial triage, follow-up, and preventive consultation.
